THANK YOU PACIFICA

By Martin Anaya

From everyone at PCT I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you! Thanks to our wonderful honorees. Thanks to our hard working board of directors, staff and volunteers and thanks to Pacifica. These honors programs are a fundraiser and “friend-raiser” in our community. I’m always struck by the love in the room. Friday night we saw that love on display as folks like Mike Crilly spoke on his times at the district and folks like Joe Marchi talked with passion about theater arts. The love on display was palpable.

So thank you Pacifica for allowing us, for indulging us and for supporting us in our ongoing efforts. Specific thanks to all our sponsors, The Tribune, The UPS store, Recology, Dial Glass, Serramonte Center, Nick’s, Luigi’s and Pavilion of Flowers. This event would not be possible without your support. Please support these fabulous businesses as they are the fabric of our community. They give back and their love for Pacifica is demonstrated in their support for this Honors program and many other efforts.

We look forward to our Fall PCT Telethon and promise some extra special surprises for our local business community. If you wish to participate or donate, now is the time. Please feel free to contact us. Until then, thank you for the love and support. Once again congratulations to our honorees. You are the very heart of Pacifica.

PCT THANKS YOU!

WHY SHOULD YOU HELP PCT?

The P.E.G. Revolution
By Martin Anaya

PCT is the longest running Community TV station in the US. As such, we have been on the forefront of education about P.E.G., actually even setting many of the precedents which help to define  P.E.G stations. So, what is Peg?

PEG is short for Public, Education and Government programming. This means that we either produce or facilitate programs in the public interest which fall into one of these three categories. It’s a very important mission but perhaps a bit dry for today's media landscape. So how do we describe the value of PEG? Well, let’s look at another example.

The cable industry likes to pat itself on the back for creating and funding C-SPAN,  This is advertised as "Public Access to the political process" and is seen as an alternative, indeed a "revolutionary" alternative to the world of entertainment driven television.

Consder PCT your local C-Span. Moreover, we are the community's  local window to the world where news, culture and important events that would never be seen on the commercial stations. Please consider becoming a friend of PCT, a friend of community media.

WELCOME TO PCT!

Thanks for visiting our site. PCT is the nation's oldest operating community media center-- proudly providing Public, Education and Government programming for the citizens of Pacifica. Want to join the conversation? Find us on...

History:
In an effort to make way for some much needed technical improvements, PCT recently had a "Spring Clean Up". We've already gotten rid of a lot of old monitors and items the station no longer needs. Then on Feb. 20th, we saw station volunteers and 4-H kids come in and help us re-paint and spruce-up!

 Thanks to all for helping

TEENS CHANGING ATTITUDES ON ALCOHOL

PCT is supporting The Partnership for a Safe and Healthy Pacifica's (P.S.H.P.) program to reduce youth access to alcohol. The effort, known as Teens Changing Attitudes on Alcohol is aimed at spreading awareness on social norms around drinking and their consequences.

P.S.H.P. was formed in February 2005 after an alcohol related car accident took the lives of two Pacifica teenagers —19-year-old Jonny Bier and 16-year-old Stephanie Echeverri.

The entire community came together to vow that such a tragedy would never happen in our town again. Other agencies working on this effort include The Office of National Drug Control Policy, Jefferson Union High School District, The Youth Leadership Institute, Asian American Recovery Services, Pacifica Police Department and the San Mateo County Health department.

To get involved in our exciting partnership watch the new program on PCT or contact P.S.H.P.::

Join the Friends of PCT

Our wonderful board member Laura Trapani is spearheading a campaign to give folks who've never participated the chance to become involved with the station. It's called the "Friends of PCT" membership.

In short, being a "friend" requires no technical skill building or getting behind a camera. It means that you support our station and are proud to do so.  Membership is only $10 for the year (or higher if you like) and aside from showing your support of PCT it will also give you valuable discounts at area retailers like Luigi's Pizza and others! Friends get a beautiful card to commemorate their support and to show participating businesses for their discounts. So call us today to express your support! We'd love to hear from you!

Maybe you want to do MORE to show your support. We are currently looking for "Street Team" members who will actually sell these $10 friend cards. There's no pay of course but a whole lotta thank yous and team spirit. plus, if you or your team sells the most cards, you can win cool "thank you" prizes like an Apple I-Pod or an ad on the PCT Bulletin Board for your show or your evnt/business etc! This is a thousand dollar value!

So if you're interested, get on board! Reach the station at 355-8000. We'll see you on the street team!

Once again Community Media Needs you!

Under the terms of the new state law which regulates cable (DIVCA), ATT has entered into competittion with Comcast to provide local Cable TV.

The plan ATT has put forward as it relates to Publlic, Education and Government channels (PEG ACCESS) however, is not a sound one.

In San Mateo and other places, ATT is already rolling out a system where your cable box also serves as an internet browser. They then place the local access channel onto their internet (I.P.) side along with many other  internet type offerings. The only 'access'  to this content is by scrolling up to channel 99 and then selecting from a drop down menu on a page full of drop down menus!
