WHY SHOULD YOU HELP PCT?

The P.E.G. Revolution
By Martin Anaya

PCT is the longest running Community TV station in the US. As such, we have been on the forefront of education about P.E.G., actually even setting many of the precedents which help to define  P.E.G stations. So, what is Peg?

PEG is short for Public, Education and Government programming. This means that we either produce or facilitate programs in the public interest which fall into one of these three categories. It’s a very important mission but perhaps a bit dry for today's media landscape. So how do we describe the value of PEG? Well, let’s look at another example.

The cable industry likes to pat itself on the back for creating and funding C-SPAN,  This is advertised as "Public Access to the political process" and is seen as an alternative, indeed a "revolutionary" alternative to the world of entertainment driven television.

Consder PCT your local C-Span. Moreover, we are the community's  local window to the world where news, culture and important events that would never be seen on the commercial stations. Please consider becoming a friend of PCT, a friend of community media.

TAKE OUR SURVEY ON CABLE TODAY

Currently The City of Pacifica is deliberating potential budget cuts eliminating contract funding to PCT. This would have the immediate impact of eliminating ALL PACIFICA GOVERMENT PROGRAMMING and a good deal of cultural programs. It could also greatly IMPACT PCT'S VIABILITY as a station, possibly taking us off the air entirely. Here are some of the programs that will be immediately eliminated:

1) Pacifica City Council,

2) Fog Fest Coverage

3) Democracy Now

3) Planning Commission

4) School District

5) Specials: Election forums, Pacifica Democrats coverage, City Finance services, etc..

TAKE OUR SURVEY:

In addition we feel strongly that these cuts will HURT THE CITY's REVENUE as a greatly diminished PCT will mean reduced cable revenue as Cable subscribers quit Comcast (see SAVE PCT/CITY FUNDS).

If a substantial number of Cable subscribers leave Comcast due to cuts this will hurt City revenues as the city collects 5% fee from the cable company.

Please take the following SHORT SURVEY. If enough people leave Comcast as a result of cuts, the city could LOSE FAR MORE REVENUE than it would save by cutting PCT. This would render the cut to PCT a bad idea from the standpoint of revenue to the city.

We need your opinion. How likely would you be to cut your cable service and seek something new if you had no local station available?
